Closed and Moving In

Carol Here: I know we haven't posted in quite a few days. We've been running around like crazy this last week, closing on the house, switching over electric, water, trash, etc., ordering furniture and new appliances, and all the other stuff that goes along with moving to a new house in a new state and basically starting over from scratch. Whew. Below is a view of the living room in our house, which opens to the kitchen.

Since David works at home all day on his computer, a comfy chair for him was a priority. I am still using a camp chair. Our plan is to rip up all the carpet (you can't see it in this photo but it is horribly stained) and reveal the beautiful oak floor underneath (all through the house). The floor will need some work, but it is old and thick and we love it!

Below is what we see from the living room looking out to the backyard. Beyond the deck is a really spectacular yard. The whole property is 3/4 acre, and is completely surrounded by huge trees. We live in the city but have a lot of privacy.

Below is what will be my studio. Yes, that is a pool table. It was left by the former occupant, and it would take an army to move. We thought about hiring someone but I've decided for now to leave it. I don't think it will be in the way, and I can cover it and use it as a work table (the plan). The fireplace is holding all my stuff while I wait for shelves. There are windows at both ends (directly to the left and right of this photo).

And a little update about my rock collection...

  1. Your stories and pictuers are most uplifting. I can't help but smile; it seems so positive. Your place looks grand; lovely yard and studio space. Thanks for sharing all your adventuers. I just wonder, when David traveled to Oregon to look for the house did you have a list of "What I need" or did you just say "whatever you think, do it?" I'm seriously impressed with all your efforts.Best of days still ahead. JB

  7. Just to finally 'be' in the house. A place of your own is so great. Knowing there's lots of work ahead is ok when you know a few more months from now your going to have it all done. settled in & very very happy drinking a lovely glass of wine in that ginormous backyard. Yeah for you guys!

  8. Welcome to Oregon!
Your house is ready to start collecting memories and be your home.
    Have fun @ IKEA.
Art Media (3 locations) in Portland has been acquired by Dick Blick - rumors of a larger location in the Pearl after the 1st of the year but several good deals in the meanwhile.

  11. You will have that place reading "Carol, David and Jacob!" in NO time! And there will be comfy places for you all to sit! You will look back at this time and say "How we did this all I'll never know!" xo

  12. Love your rock formations, and yes, they look "happy"! I see you already have your mat for walking away from your painting...a good lesson to us about how important that is! Wow! a fireplace in your studio, how could it get any better, now just get that comfy cushy chair to sit and ponder your new beginning! Or maybe it should be a swivel chair so you can look out the windows! :)

  14. Fun to see you house becoming your home. Glad y'all are settling in. An artist friend of mine had same situation with a pool table and also used it as a work table. Covered it with heavy cardboard to protect it and level the surface out...was a great work table. Loved seeing your "spot" to paint- looks pretty sweet to me:)

  15. I am so happy that you are are finding 'home' again. It looks absolutely gorgeous there - I know Texas and have wonderful friends there, but you cannot beat the northwest coast. So envious I am. I could live there on the rocky coast, but am afraid I have to stay with the Georgia pines. I wish you much happiness, great friendships and wonderful beachcombing...

  16. Your new house is so cool and that pool table? A MUST have for a studio...could be kind of fun to shoot a few rounds between paintings...or, maybe some paintings of pool balls, rack and cue? Best of luck in your new home!

  17. Congrats on the new house. I bet you are happy to have some real walls around you. Hey, you could put a big board over your, new friend, the pool table and make it a great packing and shipping workstation.

  18. NICE simple house; whatta deal! We inherited a pool table in our move, too.
But yours is nice! Model railroad, errr, extra-firm guest bed?

  26. What a wonderful home! I, too, love rocks, and we hardly have any in Florida. When I first went to Seattle to visit my sisters there (my father's third family, I didn't know them, long story) they took me to the woods and there was a river with so many smooth round rocks! I was so excited, and they just didn't understand the big deal. I love the Northwest. The trees are so huge, and of course, there are the rocks...
